The battle to succeed Oyo State
Governor, Abiola Ajimobi has intensified, after Council for Oyo State
Indigenes (COSI) nominated late Adegoke Adelabu popularly called
‘Penkelemeesi’ grandson, Adekola Adelabu, as successor to the
incumbent governor.
The council, in a statement made
available to Vanguard, argued that the choice of Adelabu’s grandson
was to ensure that more citizens of the state benefit from the
humanitarian services which the family had been rendering since
demise of the late politician over 50 years ago.
The Convener of the council, Mr.
Olalemi Abiodun, explained the decision to tip Adelabu for the 2019
governorship race addressed Bestab Luxury Suites, Lagos at the
weekend.
At the conference, Abiodun explained
that Adelabu had provided for the indigenes of Oyo had singled him
out as a competent, passionate and selfless human being to lead the
state as the next governor.
He justified Adelabu’s choice, citing
different strategic social interventions, which he said, the Bayo
Adelabu Foundation had provided for the indigenes of the state since
it was established few years back.
The convener disclosed that Adelabu
“has been providing portable water project across the nooks and
crannies of the state, though without political ambition. This is not
incidental but a trait, as he took after his grandfather, who was an
incorruptible and selfless philanthropist during his lifetime.”
To the council, Abiodun explained that
Bayo Adekola who is the grandson of the famous Adegoke Adelabu of the
old Western Region in Ibadan “has provided strategic leadership,
which has endeared him to many youths in the state.
“We will require more than a lifetime
to applaud the life of an iconic bank mogul who with no doubt , has
contributed a lot amidst personal sacrifices to the financial and
social-economic development of our dear country Nigeria and most
ultimately the State of Oyo. Not even his memoirs, The cross, Triumph
and the Crown, have done enough justice to a man whose kindness is so
rare to match.”
He called on all the sons of Ibadan and
Oyo State to throw their weight behind Adelabu, the group noted that
this is the best time to pay back to the dynasty of Adegoke Adelabu
whom through numerous scholarship trained prominent Oyo State sons,
one of which is Chief Kola Daisi.
He thus quoted Chief Kola Daisi, who
said in a speech: “ I was on the Internet, trying to get the names
of successful Great Ife; those who attended University of Ife (now
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) when I stumbled on his name.
Again, I did not know he had any relationship with the late Chief
Adegoke Adelabu ‘Penkelemesi’ until someone told me he is one of
the grandsons of the late politician.
“For someone like me who has always
been looking forward to seeing young people from my state doing great
things, it was a dream come true. Our state has been tagged as a
place that cannot produce achievers, not minding the fact great
people have been produced here, in Oyo State.”
