Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who made this known at the inauguration of the re-branded Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) in Abuja, noted that the X-Squad of the force is an established unit primarily responsible for arresting, investigating, discipline and prosecution of erring officers and men of the police force.

How terrorists recruit, radicalise youth

By Ishola Balogun

Group of Terrorists

Young Ahmadu John had a mission. It was as simple as touching two wires together. He had been promised heaven on earth. As he was told, there would be a blast, meant to obliterate the infidels, but God would spare him. He would be saved from hell fire and would be admitted into eternal bliss, he would become a martyr while his parents would be free from their abject poverty.

With all these promises, he was dressed and rigged with explosives beneath his shirt, the young boy, who was plucked from the streets of Borno, North East Nigeria a few months earlier was driven to his target area. Minutes before he was due to execute the attack, Ahmadu called his father and intimated him of all the promises including the meager money supposedly to lift his parent out of the overwhelming poverty. His father, declined, cried “No’ come back home!’, but it was too late.

That was the last interaction between him and his father before he was turned into a human bomb killing himself and several other innocent people. Ahmadu’s story is not unusual. In Nigeria and of course all over the world, terrorists have used a wave of young men and women as bombers basically because they are vulnerable and can easily be indoctrinated and brainwashed.

Remember the young Nigerian Umar Faruk AdulMutallab, who confessed to and was convicted of attempting to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear while on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253, en route Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day, 2009.

But how are they recruited and indoctrinated? Why do they succumb to various fables and misrepresentations to kill and maim innocent people all over the world? If it is true that poverty leads to ignorance and a possible factor what with those well-to-do who join terrorists in their dastard acts? In view of the recent Paris attacks by ISIS and their undying Boko Harram collaborators in Nigeria, Saturday Vanguard spoke with experts on the issue.

Brainwashing of weak minds

Sheikh AbdulWaheed Ajagbe, an Islamic and Arabic teacher said: “You know that religion was created to control the minds of the people. Today, with the help of technology, those who are educated twist the Quran to get and control the weak minded people. When you have a few educated people and a mass of the uneducated people in a given society, then there is trouble because the educated ones will use the power of what they know to exploit and control the uneducated and weak minded people.

“These weak minded and uneducated people are fed with one-sided propaganda or better still a wrong and misconceived notion by their leaders and the people they look up to. They will not question what they are being taught, neither will they use critical thinking. This leads to brainwashing. This is what the terrorists do irrespective of where they operate.

Internet as a tool

Religious extremists are increasingly turning to the internet to indoctrinate and radicalise young Muslims. One cannot underrate the power of the internet in corroding the minds of vulnerable youth. An Islamic scholar, disciplined and well behaved cleric told his story of how his only son absconded from home and a few weeks later, he sent a message home that he had gone to Syria and that his parents should not bother about him anymore. The cleric lamented that a few weeks before he absconded, he was found very busy with his computers so much that he had no time for his friends in the community.

Many other young chaps through the internet have been indoctrinated and turned to the battlefield. So, without a doubt, the Internet is the single most important venue for the radicalization of Islamic youth. Internet is a market place where the supply of suicide warriors are in abundance.

A security expert who craved anonymity said: “There are thousands of terrorism sites on the internet. You know them by their symbols. Some even hide their main objects, you get a link and with a single click, it will first take you to motivational sites to spur you. Another click and you’re at a site where you can download scripted talking points that could make one believe he has a justification for mass murder,” he explains.

Recently, it was reported that the Boko Harram recruited no fewer than 200 Cameroonians youths in Kolofata, a small border town in the Far North of the country as as base.

Not about religion

“These misfits do not actually have a religion. Terrorists think about power, they use the power to create fear in people. They want people to fear them, nothing more. So, it is not about religion, it is about self acclamation in the pursuit of personal aggrandisement. You will see children from age 10 carrying weapons already trained to torture prisoners, wearing suicide belts and chanting anti-Western songs.

For the same reason there are terrorists and bad people of every other faith. It is their choice and not a prescription of any religion. No religion permits suicide or killing of people unjustly. The body of any being is not even his property. It was given to him as a trust and it must be kept as such. He has no right to destroy it. Islam forbids all sorts of suicides, whether by bombing or silently killing oneself.

“…take not life, which God hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.” (Qur’an 6:151). Islam considers the life of every being as sacred and it does not matter which religion one belongs in upholding the sanctity of life as ordered by Allah. However, the sanctity of human life is accorded a special place.

The first and the foremost basic right of a human being is the right to live. The Glorious Qur’an further says: “…if any one slew a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” (Qur’an 5:32)

Quest for personal notoriety

In their quest for personal notoriety, some people become deviants furthering their delusions of being martyrs in the community. Others as we gathered, react negatively though, to abuses and injustice by the state. When Abu Musab al Zarqawi, a street thug, beheaded an American businessman, he became a rock star over night.

Ustaz Ajagbe described this notion as tripe and rubbish. “The ultimate success of their mentor is to manipulate them and get them to do what he wants. Killing yourself and other innocent people is not in any way near the kind of martyr the Prophet described. Like I said earlier, they are being brainwashed.”

People become misguided and act in such a way because they are lost in their belief. Some Muslim youth who have lost their identities and lost control of their minds fall victims. They become tools in the hands of these extremists and fundamentalists. They are taught a very radical and misrepresentation of the Qur’an and Hadith and most often than not, they are sent on mission of no return killing other innocent people.

Merck kicks off their social media campaign to raise awareness about diabetes early detection and prevention as part of Merck Capacity Advancement Program - CAP
  • Merck Diabetes Award aims to build diabetes experts platform in partnership with African and Asian universities
Merck (www.MerckGroup.com), a leading science and technology company, today announced the winners of the Merck Diabetes Award “Every Day is a Diabetes Day” to mark the World Diabetes Day- WDD themed ‘Eyes on Diabetes’.

Merck Diabetes Award as part of the Merck Capacity Advancement Program (www.Merck-CAP.com) was launched in April 2016 in partnership with African and Asian universities with the aim of building a platform of diabetes experts across the globe.

“Merck plays an important role in building Diabetes Care capacity in partnership with African and Asian Universities. Today marks an important day in the fight against Diabetes as we celebrate World Diabetes Day. In this context, we have announced ten Diabetes Award Winners from Africa and Asia” says Belen Garijo, Member of Merck's Executive Board and CEO Merck Healthcare. “This initiative fully illustrates our commitment to improving access to affordable Healthcare in Africa and other developing countries” Garijo added.

The scientific committee received over 500 concept submission applications from universities in Africa and Asia and 10 winners were selected for the award. The winner from each university has been granted a one year postgraduate diabetes diploma in South Wales University, United Kingdom.

Merck Diabetes Award marks another step in our long term commitment to support diabetes care strategies in developing countries through working with local governments, academia and relevant stakeholders in building healthcare capacity with a focus on Diabetes, hypertension and other non-communicable diseases in various countries in Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and Latin America” said Rasha Kelej, Chief Social Officer, Merck Healthcare when making the announcement of the winners.

Merck invited all medical students to apply for the “Merck Diabetes Award” 2016 with the theme “Every Day is a Diabetes Day”. Students across African and Asian medical universities were asked to submit a concept paper on how to improve diabetes early detection and prevention in their countries and how to encourage their society, scientific community, local authorities, media and relevant stakeholders to think and act on diabetes every day.

“Access to diabetic care in Africa will slowly grow with the initiation of this award, because it will create ‘diabetes scholars’ with more insight and knowledge on the best care needed for patients and how to facilitate it,” said Dominic Oduro-Donkor, from Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Ghana and a Merck Diabetes Award winner.

“The Merck Capacity Advancement Programme is a ground-breaking initiative to control this growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, by motivating and sensitising undergraduate students and giving them a chance to gain an in-depth knowledge about every aspect of this disease,” emphasized one of the winners Antara Bagchi, a student at the Indira Gandhi Medical College, India.

Ahmed Reja, the President of International Diabetes Federation, Africa and President of Ethiopia Diabetes Association emphasized: “We are very happy to partner with Merck to drive their strategy to build diabetes capacity and roll out the Merck Diabetes Award across the continent. The awards encourage the students to be more innovative and take a leadership position to fight diabetes in their own country.”

In addition, as part of its recognition of the World Diabetes Day, the Merck Capacity Advancement Program also launched its European Accredited Clinical Diabetes and Hypertension management 2016 tour across Africa and Asia. The program supports focused training to build diabetes healthcare capacity for medical undergraduates, postgraduates and healthcare providers in partnership with universities across the two continents.

Meet the winners of Merck Diabetes Award 2016 from African and Asian universities:

Elisha Kipkemoi Ngetich
College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi, Kenya
“I am ecstatic at winning the Merck Diabetes Award 2016. I thank Merck for providing this wonderful platform where students can further their studies in non-communicable diseases. With the current surge in the prevalence of diabetes in Kenya and other developing countries, the timing of this award could not have been better. Over the years, I have developed an interest in diabetes because I have seen patients in the different stages of this disease. I have also seen the impact that early recognition and management of this disease can have and I am privileged to broaden my understanding of the disease through this postgraduate diploma course. This will also build me academically and professionally as well. This is the kind of initiative that Kenya and Africa at large needs, an initiative to empower young doctors and other healthcare professionals. This information then trickles down to the patients and ultimately we end up with a healthy Kenya and Africa. I am convinced that the knowledge I will gather during this experience will significantly impact on my practice in the near future and hence a better outcome for our diabetic patients.”

Ralph Obure
College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi, Kenya
“The Kenyan healthcare system faces new challenges in diabetes and other non-communicable diseases and so efforts by Merck to increase capacity are timely and highly welcome. I am honoured to receive the Merck Diabetes Award that will advance my medical career and enable me to provide the much needed expertise in diabetes management in Kenya.”

Antara Bagchi
Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur, India
“Merck is providing an opportunity for the care and control of diabetes in the community especially in Asia and Africa, where non-communicable diseases are becoming increasingly prevalent. The Merck Capacity Advancement Programme is a ground-breaking initiative to control this rampant and growing epidemic of NCDs like diabetes, by motivating and sensitising undergraduate students like us, and giving them a chance to gain an in-depth, holistic knowledge about every aspect of this disease. I am sure that this initiative will have a profound impact on the health scenario, and the incidence and morbidity of NCDs will be lowered significantly.”

Samuel Mucheru
Aga Khan University, Kenya
“This award is important to me because it marks the start of a future career in diabetes management which I am very passionate about. It will help build diabetes expertise in my country, which is badly needed due to the exponential increase in diabetes cases within the population. Moreover, it will help achieve the wider goal of building capacity in diabetes management especially in the low and middle income countries whose non-communicable disease burden is on an upward trend without a commensurate increase in the number of experts to deal with this pandemic.”

Tinka George
Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Uganda
“I am grateful and happy that Merck has provided us with this great opportunity to advance our knowledge in diabetes. This opportunity of increasing the number of diabetes specialists will step up efforts in the fight against this 'silent killer', especially here in Africa where the burden of the disease is skyrocketing day and night. This will help save many lives.”

Gloria Ani-asamoah
Accra, Ghana
“It is a privilege to acquire current knowledge in the management of diabetes. It is my hope that at the end of this course l will be a better advocate in diabetes prevention and offer comprehensive diabetes care. The time is now to curb the menace of disease.”

Nujood Al Shirawi
Intern, Dubai Health Authority, United Arab Emirates
“Diabetes is a lifelong illness which affects the lives of more than 14% adults in UAE. With such a high percentage, everybody in the UAE knows individuals battling diabetes. I am grateful to Merck and Dubai Medical College for enabling the young doctors in the region to participate in such a program where a platform has been created for exchange of knowledge between national and international experts. I am looking forward to the diabetes diploma and believe it will add to my existing knowledge and help develop my understanding of this illness which affects nearly every organ in the body. It was a wonderful experience to be part of this award and I would encourage all my colleagues to participate in any future events.”

Najmah Kuddah
General Practitioner, University of Indonesia, Indonesia
“Indonesia is the fifth largest population with diabetes, yet 73.7% is undiagnosed because of lack of awareness. One of them could be someone we love. This award means everything to me, so I can do something for my family, people and my country”.

Dominic Oduro-Donkor
Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Ghana
“In Ghana many people do not have access to healthcare services in order to identify, diagnose and treat diabetes and its complications. It is essential to achieve adequate diabetes care as the number of people living with the condition continues to escalate. There is also a need to commit resources to diabetes education across Ghana and the African continent at large. Until this happens large numbers of people will end up experiencing potentially preventable diabetes-related complications such as blindness, kidney failure and amputation.
The reason why this award is important to me is because Merck has given me an opportunity to take my trade outside the consulting room and making it possible for me to help more people, to make my voice louder and to help those who can’t help themselves.
Access to diabetic care in Africa will slowly grow with the initiation of this award, because it will create ‘diabetes scholars’ who will have more insight and knowledge on the best care needed for patients and how to facilitate it. Together, our voices will resonate the need for change and improved management strategies, which will change the face of diabetes care in Africa. The mobilization of professionals across the continent of Africa is the first step in forming a platform where ideas can be put across and shared to make diabetic care easily accessible.”

Ken Munene Nkonge
University of Nairobi, Kenya
“Similar to other countries in Africa, majority of people living with diabetes in Kenya are diagnosed late, when the options available for preventing complications of the disease are few and suboptimal. I strongly believe that community-based preventative measures alongside early diagnosis and management of prediabetes and related comorbidities such as obesity and hypertension are essential to reducing the burden of type 2 diabetes on Kenya’s health care system. The Merck Diabetes Award is important to me because it will empower me with the knowledge and skills needed to make this belief a reality across Kenya. As the recipient of this award, I look forward to this amazing opportunity.”

Intracom Telecom Supplies its StreetNode™ Platform to MTN for Trial in South Africa

Intracom Telecom (www.Intracom-Telecom.com), a global telecommunication systems and solutions vendor, announced today that it has successfully completed the live field trial of StreetNode™, its SON (Self Organizing Network) based Point-to-Multipoint (PtMP) platform, implemented by MTN’s South African operation. MTN (www.MTN.com) is a digital and telecommunication service provider operating in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East. Intracom Telecom is a supplier of PtMP solutions to MTN Group.

The trial took place in Johannesburg and the aim was to evaluate the platform’s unique capabilities to provide the most advanced high-quality and high-availability services to MTN’s enterprise customers. MTN was assessing ease of deployment and the capability of the platform. The StreetNode™ solution was tested in both lab environment and external network, and the platform’s software-defined operation allowed activation and reconfiguration in the field in Point-to-Multipoint (PtMP) mode, demonstrating unparalleled flexibility.

While traditional PtMP technology only allows homing to a single base station, the trial successfully proved that StreetNode™ automatically reconnects to alternative base stations in the event of the primary base station failing, thus re-establishing connectivity for subscribers rapidly. The trial also confirmed that non-technical telecom engineers could install and commission the StreetNode™ unit quickly and easily, even at night, assisted greatly by the unique auto-alignment feature of the platform.

Navindran Naidoo, Chief Technology Officer at MTN Group, stated: “StreetNode™ demonstrated the same features as its traditional WIBAS™ PtMP platform, but StreetNode’s auto-alignment feature and capability to automatically reconnect to an alternative base station when needed, is certainly an advanced feature.”

John Tenidis, Marketing Director of Intracom Telecom's wireless solutions, stated: “This was a great opportunity to supply our StreetNode™ to MTN and demonstrate our capabilities to continuously innovate and provide solutions to customers that are in need of differentiated services. We are pleased to work with MTN and look forward to further contributing to their critical projects with our products and services.”

The company has been active in the South African market since 2010 and has extensive experience in the design, implementation and support of PtMP networks in Africa. Intracom Telecom innovates in the PtMP field featuring its SON-capable StreetNode™ platform, which is designed to implement any type of network architecture through software-defined radio operation. The platform’s highly-compact form factor together with street friendly aesthetics, allow the platform to blend invisibly with street level furniture.

Pastors fight dirty over N16.5m church land commission

Three Pastors of the Living Faith Church also known as Winners Chapel at Isheri Olofin area of Lagos state are engrossed in serious fight over the sharing of N16.5m realized from the purchase of some parcel of land and property by the church in Lagos.

The fight which was said to have started from the church premises has now moved to the Lagos court where the parties are seeking justice.

The three pastors in the matter are Deacon Dolire Oluwaniyi who is also an estate agent on the one hand and two other Pastors, Edwin Iky and Peter O. Odama on the other hand the last two acted on behalf of the church over the purchase of the property.

In the suit before Magistrate's court sitting in Ogba, with suit number, MIK/4174/16, Deacon stated that the two pastors cheated him after they collected N140m from their General Overseer, Bishop David Oyedapo and paid N130m to the owner of the property.

Apart from that, Deacon Oluwaniyi also stated that as the agent who linked the church to the owner of the property, he was entitled to N6.5 million commission which was also paid by the church but was shared between the two pastors and he was not given a dime.

Following the alleged scam, the claimant dragged the church to the court seeking an order that he should be paid his commission as a registered agent with his company’s name, Bedek properties that facilitated the transaction.

In his affidavit in support of the claim, the claimant stated that his company wrote to the church introducing the properties which contain two big church halls and a story building on one acre of land located at Iyana Odo, along Igando road in Sheri Olofin area.

He stated that he was contacted through the pastors and he linked the church to the owner of the property, one Bishop Emmanuel Omobajesu.

The claimant said after the payment for the property and he demanded for his commission and the two pastors asked him to bear it as seed to the church where as they had already collected the money from the church.

The claimant also stated that the pastors involved in the transaction are not honest and sincere as they both ate with both hands and thereby soiled their hands in the transaction.

In response, the defendant under the registered trustee of the church stated that the claimant was not appointed as its agent, legal representative nor hold any partnership and did not authorized the claimant to act on behalf of the defendant.

It also stated that the claimant have no locus standi to sue the defendant as regard to the property and demanding N6.5m agency commission.

The presiding Magistrate Mrs. M.O Osibajo have adjourned the matter till 23 November, 2016 to deliver judgments on the motions filed by the parties.

Ondo Boils, Buhari may intervenes

*INEC wants to set Ondo on fire----Mimiko
*Mimiko's antics will not work-----Jimoh Ibrahim
*INEC confirmation of Jimoh Ibrahim shocking-----PDP

‎Riots erupted across many parts of Ondo state yesterday as protesters trooped to the streets to protest the substitution of the name of the Peoples' Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Mr Eyitayo Jegede SAN by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with that of Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim for next month's governorship election in the state.

As early as 6.30am the rioters had barricaded all the roads leading to Akure, the state capital chanting war songs and paralysed both economic and social activities as commercial banks and shops were closed down.

Workers and students were turned back while commercial vehicle owners deserted the streets.

The protesters made burn fire on all the major roads in the state and resisted all attempts by the security agents to disperse them. In the midst of sporadic gunshots and tear-gas by the combined team of security agents the protesting youths remained undeterred.

Following the outbreak of riots in the state, Governor Olusegun Mimiko hurriedly left the state for the presidential villa to brief President Muhammadu Buhari saying what INEC had done was capable of setting the state on fire.

He vowed that everything possible would be done to make the commission reverse the decision, which he described as shocking.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that similar protests were recorded in Ondo town, Ore in Odigbo local government area, Ilara, Idanre, Owo, Okitipupa, Isua Akoko, Ikare Akoko, Ipele and many other towns and villages in the state.

Some of the protesters also stormed the office of the INEC and were addressed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC) Olusegun Agbaje, who explained the reason behind the removal of Jegede as the PDP candidate.

Agbaje said “We received a court order from the High Court in Akure on Wednesday but there was a subsisting ruling by Justice Abang on Thursday and we had to comply with the order"

He however said that another court order can upturn the situation saying "the situation will continue that way until the matter is decided by the Supreme Court if the parties choose to proceed to the apex court. We do not have any candidate but we will always abide by the laws guiding the process.”

Mimiko consults president

As a result of the uprising, Mimiko on Friday morning quickly raced to the presidential villa to formally intimate President Buhari on the developments in the state, appealing to him to intervene in the matter at least to prevent the crisis from escalating.

According to the governor, it was shocking that INEC substituted Jegede with Ibrahim's name on the final list of various parties' candidates, saying it was an act of gross impunity.

He recalled that the election that threw up Ibrahim was conducted in Ibadan, Oyo state and was not supervised by the relevant bodies, wondering why Jegede whose election took place in Ondo with the presence of INEC and security agencies as monitors was set outside.

It will be recalled also that Ibrahim was a product of Ali Modu Sheriff factional leadership of the PDP while Jegede belonged to the Ahmed Markifi's faction.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after his meeting with Buhari, Mimiko said the crisis in the state could assume a wider dimension if the situation was not reversed.

He said: "I am shocked. In logic, in law, in politics, there is no basis for it whatsoever. The Jimoh Ibrahim factor in all of this is predicated on a court order given by Justice Abang. Incidentally that court order is about zonal and state executives of PDP. That order is about 2009 election. Neither Jimoh Ibrahim nor Tayo jegede were parties to the suit.

"So, when that judgement suddenly came and the name of Jimoh Ibrahim was sent to INEC after a primary election which was conducted in Ibadan without INEC monitoring it, without security agencies, SSS or police observing it, INEC took the right decision initially by making it clear that it is not state or zonal executive that is empowered by the Electoral Act to conduct election and also that the Abang judgement on the basis of which they were putting pressure on INEC to accept Jimoh Ibrahim as a candidate was referring to 2009 election.

"There is nothing about 2016 election in that judgement. So, on the basis of this, INEC refused and discountenanced the name of Jimoh Ibrahim as a candidate. Then, they went ahead and filed form 48 and from the blues, the same Justice Abang mandated INEC to replace the name of Eyitayo Jegede who emerged through a primary process that was supervised by INEC, security agencies with all delegates that were supposed to participate. Justice Abang ordered that Jimoh Ibrahim should replace Eyitayo Jegede. Ordinarily, we should have disregarded the order because Jegede was not a party to the suit, neither was Jimoh Ibrahim. But we were also advised that it was very important for us to appeal so that if anybody is up to a mischief, we would have taken the plank off the person.

"Immediately we appealed, that notice of appeal especially when we had filed in our papers, submitted our briefs and got a date, should serve as a stay of execution.

"We don't want to take chances because somebody in INEC told us that they obey the last order in the commission. Some went to court and obtained two different orders mandating INEC not to substitute Eyitayo Jegede. We served one on INEC around 10 am yesterday, and we served INEC with the other one at the close of business around 3 pm. But around 7 or 8 pm, we got to know that INEC for no justifiable reason had substituted the name of Jegede and replaced it with that of Ibrahim.

"The question to ask is on whose order has INEC done that? Apart from the fact that we have two restraining orders on INEC, INEC knows fully well that Jimoh Ibrahim's primaries were held in Ibadan. There was no report by any security agency that the security situation in Ondo state warranted the movement of the primaries to Ibadan or anywhere outside the state for that matter.

"Under INEC guidelines, the time for substitution of candidates has even elapsed. This action potentially can cause a breach of peace. In Ondo state in the last seven and half years, we have done everything possible to put good governance on the table. We see this action as potentially dangerous. It can cause conflagration in the state and that is why as the chief security officer of the state, I have come to alert Mr President of the potential danger of this injustice so that we can nib it in the bud."

Mimiko however stated that his intervention on the protest in the state had yielded result.

"The whole day from 5am, I have been on phone with stakeholders to ensure they keep the peace in the state. The extent of the protest you have seen has been reduced by our intervention to ensure that there is no breach of peace. For the people of the state, it is just from the blues. I have assured them that this injustice will not stay. We will continue to explore all avenues to make INEC see reasons why this impunity must not stand.

"If INEC finds it difficult to obey court order, a credible election starts with a process like this".

Asked of the President's response to his request, the governor said "Mr president has promised to look into it and that if there is any injustice, we should be rest assured that it will be rectified."

Mimiko's antics will not work—---Jimoh Ibrahim

In his own reaction to the uprising, the INEC recognised PDP governorship candidate in Ondo state, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim said the burning of tyres allegedly orchestrated by Governor Mimiko was to give a false impression of security challenge in the state but that the trick would not work.

In a statement he issued yesterday, he said “yesterday, Mimiko called on the drivers’ union in the state, whose chairman is his relative, to gather disused tyres across the state and burn them so as to show that there are security challenges in Akure town. While the tyres were burning, school children were attending their classes, banks were opened, market women and traders were carrying on their economic activities, and courts were sitting”.

According to him, “regrettably, Mimiko’s orthodoxy has played out to be fake, empty and unbecoming of a person that occupies the position of the governor of a state. I am happy to note that Mimiko eventually met with President Muhammadu Buhari, a president that Governor Mimiko had described, in a meeting with the former President Goodluck Jonathan, as unfit to govern Nigeria and according to Governor Mimiko, the president does not have a school certificate. Regrettably, this tyre burning for sympathy will not work as Ondo State remains peaceful.

Akure monarch sues for peace

Meanwhile, Deji of Akureland Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi yesterday appealed to rioters across the state to remain calm and be law abiding. In a statement last night, the Oba appealed to the protesters to allow the law take its full course

The monarch, in the statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Micheal Adeyeye said, "the Akure Deji-in council at an emergency meeting presided over by the Deji and paramount ruler of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (Odundun II) today (yesterday) reviewed the list of gubernatorial candidates as released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the attendant effect of the substitution of the name of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) with that of Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the 26th November gubernatorial election in ondo state.

“The council equally reviewed the statement credited to the Resident Electoral Commissioner who confirmed that the matter remains a legal issue that will be addressed by a higher court of law.

"In view of this, the Deji-in-Council wishes to appeal to all residents and indigenes of Akure to remain calm and be law abiding over this matter. The council urges all and sundry to desist from making bon-fire and dismantle all barricades along the major roads in Akure and its environs.

"The council admonishes all parties that the current peace being enjoyed cannot be compromised under any guise as there is no substitute for peace. The council wishes to thank and appreciate the law enforcement agencies for carrying out their lawful duties with every sense of responsibility and a high level of professionalism. The council advised all residents to go about the normal and lawful duties without any fear or favour.

INEC confirmation of Jimoh Ibrahim shocking------PDP

Meantime, the Peoples Democratic Party has said that the confirmation of Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party was shocking and surprising

In a statement yesterday, the spokesman of the party, Dayo Adeyeye said the commission monitored the Primary Election conducted in Akure, Ondo State by the Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi led PDP which produced Hon. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, and did not monitor the purported primary election that produced Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim which was said to have held in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

"INEC cited the Order from Justice Okon Abang of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court as the reason for publishing Barr. Ibrahim’s name as PDP Candidate but ignored another order from the Ondo State High Court, which is a Court of Coordinate jurisdiction that compelled INEC

to maintain Hon. Eyitayo Jegede’s name as the candidate of the PDP.

The least INEC could have done in the circumstance was to maintain status quo and stick to its own earlier decision pending a superior order or Judgment from a superior court. But that did not happen in this case.

"This singular decision of INEC has generated sporadic reactions from the electorates in Ondo state leading to violent protest and damages. This could have been avoided if INEC had adhered strictly to the letters and characters of the Electoral Laws and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"We therefore warn that external forces should not sit in Abuja and set Ondo state ablaze. Whatever authority in Abuja, whether it's the executive that is using the judiciary or vise versa, must realize that they cannot for selfish political reasons toy with the fate of millions of people in Ondo state. Who emerges governor of the state should be the decision of the electorates themselves through the ballot and not from any organ of the Federal Government in Abuja.

"It is a known facts that Ondo people are politically sophisticated and any attempt to truncate the will of the people will be resisted vehemently. References should be made to the 1965/66 and 1983 political violence in the west that brought about the collapse of the 1st and the2nd Republic. We should therefore be careful not to repeat history.

"Finally, we call on the people of Ondo State to eschew violence and remain calm. We believe in the rule of law and the matter is already in the Appeal Court, and we are certain that the PDP shall get justice on this issue and Hon. Eyitayo Jegede will be returned to contest under the platform of our great Part" he said.

Jegede remains our flagbearer-----Ondo PDP

Also, the Chairman of the PDP in Ondo state, Chief Clement Faboyede has argued that "the event culminating in replacing Jegede is a crude hallmark and handiwork of some moles in PDP and some highly placed government officials of APC at the federal level"

He submitted that the moles within the PDP believed that removing Jegede from the race will pave way for easier manipulation of the election results in favour of the APC candidate

He however said that Eyitayo Jegede remained the flagbearer of PDP saying "it is not the duty of any court to impose or dictate candidate for the party. It is a pre election matters and the Supreme Court which is the highest organ of judiciary in the land has said it severally that pre election is not a matter of the court."

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to be father to all and should give room to a level playing ground for the nation's democracy to survive and allow the wish of the people to prevail, noting that the people of the state voted for Buhari in the 2015 election despite being controlled by PDP government. He commended the protesters for not taking laws into their hands while he urged security agents not to use force to disperse peaceful protesters.

I will not jettison my mandate-----Jegede

The rejected candidate, Eyitayo Jegede in his reaction expressed optimism that the Appeal Court would revalidate his mandate to fly the Flag of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in next month's election. Jegede said attempts to substitute his name will not stand as justice would be done at the appeal court.

"I am aware of a recent litigation resulting in the announcement of another person as the governorship candidate of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party. However, I wish to assure our teeming supporters in Ondo State that necessary legal steps have been taken to seek justice. Already, the matter is before the Court of Appeal"

He thanked the people of the state for their support and steadfastness since the campaign activities began and their total commitment to his lofty programmes designed to take Ondo to greater heights.

Jegede assured that he will not for any reason jettison the mandate freely given to him by generality of PDP members in the state.

APC, INEC want to kill democracy----Fayose

also reacting, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has described the recognition of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the PDP candidate for the November 26 governorship poll in Ondo State by INEC as dangerous to democracy. Arguing that what INEC did amounted to rigging the Ondo State governorship election in advance, Fayode accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of turning the INEC into its department and willing tool that can be deployed at will to manipulate election. Fayose said recognising someone who did not emerge through any known electoral process signalled the end of democracy in the country.

At a press conference in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Fayose said the recognition granted Ibrahim had further confirmed his fear that the APC had the intention of turning the country into a one-party state.

According to him, “The question to ask INEC is; having accepted the candidate presented by the Makarfi-led PDP National Caretaker Committee for the Edo State election, relying on the judgment of the Federal High Court, Port-Harcourt, despite the Abuja Federal High Court order at that time, what has changed? Obviously, it is either INEC is playing double-standard or has descended into the arena.

“With the development in Ondo Guber election and the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is clear that INEC is a department in APC led federal government. By this development also, I am vindicated that other political parties and stakeholders are now contesting election against INEC.

Ibeshe serial rapist strikes again! kills pregnant mother, attacks family, neighbour

By Bose Adelaja
Tragedy struck in Oluwoye, Ibeshe, Ikorodu yesterday, when a suspected serial rapist struck, killing an expectant mother and attacked her husband and two children. The victims among whom were simply identified as Kazeem, Afusa and Baba who occupied a room apartment before the incident were presumed to have been attacked with a grinding stone and a sharp knife while in slumber.        We gathered that the husband was left in coma while one of the children had his ear chopped off by their assailants who was said to have escaped after perpetrating the evil.

Kazeem, Husband of the raped woman
Having completed his mission in Kazeem’s house, the suspected serial rapist was said to have extended the crime to a neighbouring building and attacked a member of Oodua Peoples’ Congress OPC, simply identified as Baba Junior who is presently under medical attention at a private hospital. Information at Vanguard disposal said the suspect gained access into the victims’ rooms by breaking through the window. An eye witness who pleaded anonymity said the door to the victims’ room remained shut throughout the operation and nobody could give the account of what transpired in the night as none of the victims was fit to talk to people. However, the Nigeria Police Force have been intimated and have commenced investigations. According to eye witnesses’ account, there was no cry for help by the victims throughout the operation but a co-tenant observed while going out that Kazeem’s window was broken then he raised the alarm which attracted other neighbours but to their astonishment, the door to the room shut and that was when it dawned on them that a serial rapist had struck. On breaking the door, Kazeem and his the two children were found helpless on the floor while the deceased was lying on the bed but nobody could account for what transpired.
While Kazeem’s neighbours were attending to the victims, another shout for help was heard in the neighborhood where Baba Junior was found in the pool of his own blood with a grinding stone placed beside him. Kazeem and his children were taken to Ikorodu General Hospital while Baba Junior was taken to a nearby hospital but the body has been deposited at a morgue. Owode\Ibeshe town comprises over 40 community development associations have recorded series of serial rape including that of a teacher with Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe 27 years old Grace Jubril on Sunday June 5, 2016. Also, 86 years old Mrs Belau Jimoh was raped and attacked at Oke-Ota in the month of May while a similar incident was recorded in Oremeta community in July 2016, where a 63 years old grandmother and her eight years old granddaughter Marvelous and Fransisca Mba were raped to coma and both were admitted at Ikorodu General Hospital.

Injured Security personnel in the area
The series of attack and rape have put the communities under pressure such that a large number of women have moved out en masse while the remaining now live under palpable fear. In the month of May, some Ibeshe women staged a peaceful protest to the palace of the traditional ruler Oba Richard Ogunsanya but all to no avail. Also in the month of June, the community development committee staged a peaceful protest at the State house, Alausa and presented a letter to a representative of the governor about the happenings in their communities but all these seem to have yielded no result.

In line with the happenings, the joint community development associations had on Saturday September 3rd, 2016, organized a prayer session to cleanse the land and this seems to have yielded a positive result until yesterday when another occurrence was recorded. The traditional ruler of Ibeshe has kept mum over the development during series of Vanguard visit to his office but a member of the House of Representative in charge of Ikorodu Constituency Honourable Jimi Benson said he will get to the root of the matter. In a telephone conversation with Vanguard, he said, “ I have held a meeting with the people of Ibeshe Community Development Association over the security issue bothering them, considering that security is everybody’s business and the people are best suited to provide the necessary information the Police need to apprehend the person behind the rapes and kidnaps in Ibeshe,’’
